Description

Carbon Black (P.Bk 7) is a deep, neutral black watercolour pigment known for its exceptional opacity and smooth handling. Derived from the carbonization of organic materials, it delivers a pure, balanced black with consistent coverage. Favoured for its versatility, Carbon Black excels in achieving dramatic depth, crisp outlines, and powerful tonal contrast across a wide range of artistic applications.

Highly pigmented and opaque, Carbon Black is ideal for producing bold, saturated washes as well as subtle, translucent layers when diluted. With excellent tinting strength, it can darken other pigments efficiently without altering their essential hue, making it invaluable for mixing greys, softening colours, and building atmospheric effects. It’s a reliable tool for defining forms, sculpting shadows, and adding intensity to everything from landscapes and portraits to expressive abstracts.

This pigment boasts outstanding lightfastness, ensuring artworks maintain their richness and clarity over time. Its neutral undertone complements both warm and cool palettes, providing balance and depth wherever it’s used. Whether you’re working in fine detail or sweeping strokes, Carbon Black (P.Bk 7) is a foundational pigment for artists looking to explore the expressive range of black with control, consistency, and timeless impact.

Once you've used this black you won't go back!

This is not so much a black but more a fun way of playing with the shadows.... it gives off a brown/deep sepia hue when you water it down and gives great results when you mix it with any of the other Jackman's colours, almost making the original colour somehow more rich. In a way it gives a colour a deep, Medieval, gothic touch if you know what I mean.

Accidentally discovered Jackman's carbon black while mixing skin tones. Its sooo useful in getting shades right with a deep brown black effect. I use this a lot!
